Here is a blast from the Past about the Marlin Stadium - Miami Herald, April 9, 2008:
"This is not costing the taxpayers of Miami-Dade County a cent," Alvarez told The Miami Herald. He stressed that the county would own the stadium, and the Marlins would pay rent.
Studies suggest that convention centers, like Miami Beach's, are more lucrative for taxpayers than stadiums. Alvarez didn't dispute that, but said the county would "make sure that our convention center comes up to par and stays competitive. It's not a matter of this instead of that. It's a matter that we can do both," he said. "We're not building a stadium in lieu of something else."

How things have morphed...The County under the NEW PLAN will not own the stadium...in fact if Loria dies we get nothing.
Ewwwwww. Government Games, local level.
Carlos Alvarez has played Russian Roulette once too often. The Marlins are not paying rent. They are getting their rent paid by the taxpayers. The Marlins are paying nothing towards the construction of the $150 million in parking garages. The Marlins will pay a minor amount to lease parking spaces, but only on game days. On non-game days the taxpayers will be responsible for all expenses and all debt service expenses.
The Marlins do not have to come up with construction money until years after the taxpayers have invested the vast majority of the required funds. Then there is no guarantee the Marlins will be able to borrow the money they promised for their share.
Are a majority of commissioners brain dead?
The majority of the commissioners only care about their $50,000+ per year in salary, their perks, their pensions, getting re-elected and their outside income. God forbid they do any research and vote on behalf of the residents.
Carlos Alvarez is a stooge of the greedy who want the no-bid contracts to build the Marlins stadium and the four garages. Alvarez is a joke to the taxpayers.
