County Commissioner Katy Sorenson questions FPL nuclear ambition ... by gimleteye

There was at least one news report of the public meeting called for by Commissioner Sorenson, to air concerns about safety at the nuclear facility at Turkey Point. FPL didn't attend. Guess FPL counted all their votes, needed at the county commission and Commissioner Sorenson isn't one of them. The unreformable majority shouldn't be so complacent.

CUTLER BAY, Fla. -- "I really don't want to glow in the dark," said Bob Welsh outside a meeting Thursday night regarding the safety of Florida Power & Light's Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant.

The meeting was called by District 8 Miami-Dade Commissioner Katy Sorenson, who said recent events at the plant have caused concern for her and residents in the area. Those events include instances where security guards fell asleep on the job, a contract employee who drilled a hole into a critical pipe, and an employee who quit his job last year, claiming FPL wanted him to turn reactors on too quickly after a blackout.
South Miami resident Bob Welsh said he's worried about FPL's motivations, saying the financial interests that control FPL would "push the envelope of safety."
Commissioner Sorenson held the meeting to give FPL a chance to address public officials and residents. But representatives from FPL didn't attend.
"They claim they didn't want to come because of a pending lawsuit. I think that's a bit lame," Sorenson told Local 10's Rob Schmitt.
"There are many sensitive aspects of a nuclear security program that should not be discussed in an open forum," FPL told Local 10.
While attendees left the meeting dissapointed, some defended FPL and the power plant that employs many in southwest Miami-Dade County.
"I think there's some crying wolf going on here," said George Tabor, a former FPL employee.
