City of Miami: Marlins Meeting Set for Friday has been Canceled. By Geniusofdespair

The Friday meeting at Miami City Hall to vote on the Marlin Baseball Stadium deal has been canceled. Another meeting has been set, according to Commissioner Sarnoff, it is March 19th.

Speaking of other stuff...The Miami Herald is said to be facing another 20 percent reduction in staff. I was told department chiefs must make their decision by Friday. Pay cuts and furloughs are likely for those left behind. Ick.

I know they moved Mike Vazquez off the City Beat (onto Gambling beat), Chuck Rabin is replacing him there, and Matt Haggman is replacing Chuck at the County. These are indeed tough times for the 4th estate!

The goal of the privately owned Marlins to take over $2 billion from the taxpayers is being kept alive by special interests. The Marlins get to put up almost "no money down"? Carlos Alvarez should stick to being a policeman. He is certainly no businessman.

It now appears dim witted High School dropout City of Miami Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones has sold her soul to the devil and she intends to vote to waste over $2 billion of the taxpayers money on the Marlins stadium deal. Although the Marlins refuse to show its weak financials and the taxpayers are hurting Spence-Jones is OK with wasting the taxpayers money. After all, it is not her money nor her constituents. Her constituents do not pay taxes. Someone should tell Spence-Jones that she represents all of Miami.

Watch Spence-Jones spend the entire "tourist bed tax" revenue stream on one item. One item that even the Marlins admit does nothing to attract tourists.

Someone should tell Spence-Jones that tourism is South Florida's economic engine. The more tourists are encouraged to visit our hotels, walk on our beaches and visit our convention centers the more full-time jobs will be available to her people. Real jobs. Not the part-time 6 hours per week minimum wage $8.50 per hour below poverty level jobs that might be available at the proposed Marlins Stadium.

Tourist Development Tax dollars should be spent to attract tourists.
