That sign is a National Park sign. That means land saved for future generations, not houses. As developers continue their desiccation of the Everglades, we will have these small slivers to remind us of the great wilderness we have lost.
I know it is in the park. But, that doesn't stop the developers from having the itch to build to be there.
Some years ago, JEB was reported (as told to me by the person he was with) to have looked at the satellite picture of Florida hanging in his office and pointed out all the undeveloped land in South Florida. Unfortunately, the area he was pointing to was the Everglades and the person he was with was a reporter. My friend started to ask "the question" and staff scooped the governor up and pushed him to his "next appointment".
Even before that, I took the opportunity to use a similar photo before the commission and suggested that Florida was an island connected to the rest of the US by a land bridge. That we would eventually have to stop building, because the weight of all concrete in South Florida would cause the land to crack and fall off. So, here we are 10 years later and my insurance policy has sink hole coverage AND volcanic action coverage. And the company is quitting writing policies here in Florida.
Actually, I once was stupid enough to get out of my vehicle and look at a pile of gators like this, although a chain link fence separated us, one very big, perhaps twelve to thirteen feet came out from behind some brush and came very fast----I literally had to jump on the trunk and my wife had to move away slowly....beautiful, but don't be this stupid.

And to think they want build houses there... Someone needs to tell them that gators don't need houses, just little live things to eat.
