The Miami Herald’s Editorial Board agrees with my January 22nd post that the proposed Miami-Dade County bailout for small businesses is an excuse to add to Commissioner’s slush funds. The Herald says just that, and more interesting:The county government already helps small businesses, and it does so through a process that determines qualifications, viability and job-creating ability. It's called the Community and Economic Development agency. The county also appropriates money to the Beacon Council for furthering economic development here and for nurturing existing firms. Miami International Airport and the Port of Miami also have had programs to boost businesses connected to their industries. The county's agencies follow set guidelines and must be impartial in awarding grants and other aid.
I see this Bailout idea of Commissioner Rolle as just another example of trading money for votes. So, County Commissioners, do not vote for the 13 Commission District Bailout, as I said:
“Let’s get out of crisis-think and really do a reality check on the use of shrinking County funds.”

SAVING MOM AND POP: Miami-Dade County's popular Mom and Pop Small Business Grant Program survived last week's budget fight, coming out with 85% of last year's $1.95 million funding after initially being targeted for elimination in Mayor Carlos Alvarez's proposed budget. Impassioned pleas at a budget hearing from business owners who benefited from the program and strong support from commissioners such as Dennis Moss helped to save the program. In addition, commissioners can contribute to the program from their own budgets.
The priorities of the BCC are out of touch with the priorities of the residents of the county. Sadly enough, the BCC will never listen. A few examples are UDB, charter review, Arsht nee PAC, transit, housing and everything else they touch. Try naming the successes, where we were proud to have government decisions at the county level work out without scandal, fraud or cost overruns, good luck.
They really think they are something, they must have slush funds going back to their districts, they certainly can't run on their record. Basically a free political advertisement.
Noticed in the projects for the stimulus listed in the Conference of Mayors report is the following line item:
Miami‐Dade FL CDBG Establish Credit Facility for Small Business Support 53,500,000 25
Wonder if thats the source of funds and the commission is just getting ahead of it so they can control it.
Every project you have ever heard of is listed in the "shovel ready" report, but very few are actually ready to start.
