Mango Strut Parade: a fine time was had by all

A fine afternoon of satire and parody in Coconut Grove. Congratulations to Glenn Terry and the intrepid band of volunteers who put on the Mango Strut Parade every year. This year, the broad themes of a failed presidency and a national financial catastrophe dominated, with smaller themes woven in. Highlights... Kendall Coffey on the back of the Shell Lumber truck playing rhythm guitar to the theme of Mango-Obama, civic activist Barbara Lange as a Somali Pirate.

I liked the "N-ASS-A" float propelled by a boat latrine and broken marine electronics. A 'digital' presidential count-down clock made of cloth. A shoe-throwing opportunity at a caricature of the president with signs, 'if the shoe fits, you must throw it". Taking it on the chin, in addition to George Bush: Sarah Palin (several times), Dick Cheney, oil companies, auto manufacturers and Wall Street bankerz. The zeitgeist was on full display on a bluebird day. Local city and county elected officials must be relieved that after all the energy was spent, there was none left for them.

Do The Mangobama

Everybody's doing a brand new dance now,
(Come on Baby, Do The Mangobama)
I know you'll get to like it if you give it a chance now,
(Come on Baby, Do The Mangobama)
There's never been a dance that's so easy to do,
You're really gonna like it if your state is blue,
So come on come and Do The Mangobama with me

You gotta wiggle your ears now,
Come On Baby, turn left, turn right,
You gotta move on like Barack, Whoa Whoa

Everybody's riding the Obama train now,
(Come on Baby, Do The Mangobama)
Rolling over Hillary and John McCain now,
(Come on Baby, Do The Mangobama)
You spin around a basketball and bump your fist
You never saw your mama do a dance like this
So come on come on and Do The Mangobama with me

(a 4 bars instrumental solo)

Yeh, Yeh, Yeah, Soon he'll be the President and he's got a plan now,
(Come on baby, Do The Mangobama)
Bail out our economy, oh yes he can now,
(Come on baby, Do The Mangobama)
You empty out your pockets and you cover your tush
Say hello to Camelot and bye bye Bush
So Come on come on and Do The Mangobama with me,

Come on baby do the Mangobama
Come on baby do the Mangobama
Come on baby do the Mangobama
