I was often confused how bribes were delivered. This article cleared that up: Transit worker Charles Wellons who was a go between for a $3,0000 bribe a while back (and is a current transit worker) said "Plastic" bag (this was in the newspaper version of the article). In any even catch this transit article about nepotism and other crap. Aren’t you glad County Commissioner Dorrin Rolle’s daughter was able to find a job at transit? I am more upset with the nepotism than what they call the “pipeline” rules which allowed for:
“The new hires included aides and secretaries to ex-Mayor Alex Penelas, current and former Commissioners Barbara Carey-Shuler, Jimmy Morales, Betty Ferguson, José ‘Pepe’ Diaz, Sally Heyman, Dennis Moss, Katy Sorensen and Natacha Seijas, and retired U.S. Rep. Carrie Meek.”
I am not as upset about giving preference to people already on the County payroll a transfer. Meek, that is another story.
This transit article will make you sick — it is in 4 parts, here is the main link to this transit boondoggle with a GREAT video. Watch the video!!
I have previously written about Transit, that the NEW sales tax money for NEW transit is now being diverted to routine maintenance and salaries. They increased the operating budget by over 100 million dollars instead of developing new transit. Where is your outrage people? Where is my sledge hammer? Go to our index on Transit (right side of page) to get the history of how you are being used and be sure to read the article above.

It's horrific what the county has done with the 1/2 penny transit sales tax, but the dumb people of Dade County continue to vote for every new proposed tax. This was the only county that voted i/f/o the proposed college tax -the rest of the state said "NO". Who understands this trend?
The BCC continues to play dumb on this issue. If you think they did not know about Shiver and Alvarez making a backroom deal with the union who worked the phone banks you are naive. The unions have an umbilical cord attached to the BCC.
Here is the even more depressing part of this story: if the federal govt is going to spend billions on infrastructure to revive the economy, who do you think they will rely on to get the money out? ... the same crew that is stuck in place at MD Transit.
Leibowitz did a good job connecting employees at the agencies to political patrons: this is how the county operates-- a patronage system that rewards failure.
I know we have to get the economy going, but I dread the corruption: it will be as bad as contract awards to private corporations in Baghdad.
