Is Mayor Diaz going to Washington? by gimleteye

Is Miami Mayor Manny Diaz going to Washington? If you were President-elect Obama, what would you ask him? Let's start by asking about his concrete achievements. Readers?

i think he has been a pretty good major. But as years pass, they get full of themselves. His first 4 years were good.

I'd say, you want to run HUD: what have you done for affordable housing in Miami?

Let's measure the tax base of all those condominiums against the cost of insolvency, foreclosures, and bailouts.

A new metric for green prosperity.

Did you really save the City or, wasn't it already fully recovered by the time you entered office??

Great...just what we need. Let’s see…there was malfeasance with the fire fee, had a sweet real estate deal with a commissioner and city manager while getting a raise ($53,000) that the taxpayers had no clue was coming while keeping it all secret, has dealings outside City Hall, he has ignored the will of Miami's residents to help his developer friends and forgetting Economics 101. I guess going to Washington would help his friends even more…and the beat goes on!

Hey, he was on the cover of Esquire Magazine as the new green mayor; doesn't that count for anything.

take all the shots you want, but he looks good on paper. Democrat Cuban American, Conference of Mayors Chair, he's on a list somewhere...

I think the real question is, how is his seat filled here? Its more a question of if and one of when.

He should ask Norman Braman for a letter of recommendation for transparency in government, uh-oh that won't work.

He is seeking a high position in HUD. His plan is simple: place his puppet, Joe Sanchez, as the interim Mayor, thus making it easy for Sanchez to become Mayor (this is how he started as commissioner - appointed when Hernandez got arrested) then Sanchez would recommend an interim for his seat. So business as usual for the City of Miami. Another eight years of Diaz.

I hope the Obama team looks a little more closely at Miami and Cuban American politics. It is true that thanks are due Hispanic voters in Florida. But when Diaz made his endorsement speech at the Biltmore, of Obama, there was faint applause from the gathered crowd. I'm not sure what the answer is; and maybe an appointment for Diaz is the answer. But maybe there is a better way to go; how about Joe Garcia?

does anyone know what the city charter states for the appointment process? Is it up to the city commission? Governors appointment?

The candidates for such election shall be qualified as provided in section 4 of this Charter and the qualifying period and requirements for such election shall be as provided in section 7 of this Charter.
(b) If the remaining city commissioners shall fail or refuse to fill such vacancy within ten days after it occurs, as provided herein, the city commission shall call a special election to fill the vacancy to be held at a date not less than thirty-eight or more than forty-five days after the expiration of the ten-day period and the five day qualifying period. The qualifying period for such special election shall be for the five days not including Saturday, Sunday or legal holidays before the thirty-eighth day before the date of the election and the procedure for the election not otherwise provided for in this section shall be as provided in section 7 of this Charter. The person who receives the greatest number of votes for the office in said special election is elected to fill the vacancy until the election as provided in subsection (a) (1) or (2) of this section.
(c) If the city commissioners shall fail to comply with their duties as set forth in this section, then, and in that event, the court is hereby empowered and authorized to enforce compliance with this act or to call an election itself to fill such vacancy or vacancies on the city commission or in the office of mayor.
(Laws of Fla., ch. 22393(1943); Laws of Fla., ch. 27724(1951); Ord. No. 8287, 11-5-74; Res. No. 97-447, § 2, 7-3-97; Res. No. 01-843, § 2, 8-9-01)

I hope Manny "I love concrete" Diaz cannot withstand the Obama review process. I would be disappointed if Obama hired such a no substance "I love myself" politician.

Too many investigations...

I must admit Manny Diaz is effective at demanding the taxpayers pay dozens of City staffers to generate press releases and photo ops to promote Manny Diaz. Too bad Manny Diaz lacks the ability to do anything for Miami except approve now empty and effectively bankrupt condo towers.

I guess the good news is that Manny will be out of the city of Miami.
Hopefully Regalado will take the reigns...
