The State of Florida Takes Strong Stance on Development. by Geniusofdespair

The State of Florida is cracking down on wayward Counties and their approval of development gone wild. According to the Ocala Business Journal and this decision could impact Miami-Dade County

"An attempt to resolve a spat between state planners and the Marion County Commission over some rejected land-use changes might not have turned out as county officials hoped.

The Florida Department of Community Affairs — known as DCA — is discouraging the county from submitting any major land-use changes in 2009 that would entail more residential construction in the future.

Marion County, it seems, has already approved too many homes, submits too many incomplete or piecemeal changes to its comprehensive land-use plan and relies too heavily on landowners and developers in drafting such amendments.

DCA officials cannot justify approving any comprehensive plan amendments that would add more rooftops to the community. And until the county gets its proverbial house in order, the County Commission most likely can offer only commercial or industrial projects in its comp-plan submission for next year."

We spend a lot of time in and around Ocala. The countryside is like a mini-Miami-Dade; horse farms being subdivided into tract houses. Foreclosures and houses beging for buyers. Our local Ocala bank just got a "zero stars" rating. Any reason one might consider moving to Ocala is history as developers changed the landscape to look like "any town USA". Maybe DCA can slow the train but the next governor may be a Jeb and it will be business as usual. I believe that DCA's new found religion has more to do with the threat of Florida Hometown Democracy than any real reform. DCA has been impotent for a decade and the head of DCA has admitted that he is desperate to kill Florida Hometown Democracy. He is not exactly slow growth or anti-sprawl; his testamony in support of 4-laning Krome Avenue bears witness to his pro-development/pro-sprawl position. While it's nice to have DCA's support against bad plans, make no mistake, it is temporary.

I'd suggest DCA send that same message to Miami-Dade although it'd be a waste of hot air!
