I'm not going to write about the financial markets: I don't know what more there is to say, that hasn't been written on this blog about the political origins in Florida of the credit crisis. It was here that the gears and ratios of a Growth Machine worked to cement a political orthodoxy that is coming apart at the seams. What I want to write about, briefly, is John McCain's spurious claim that he will see to it that we have "victory" in Iraq.
A more reckless, irresponsible claim is scarcely imaginable. Ever since George Bush and the neocons propelled the nation to war in Iraq, I have wondered what "victory" looks like. We aren't fighting an identifiable army. We can't conquer the nation militarily. There is no chance of grafting democracy on tribal and religious fiefdoms that are still slitting throats over thousand year old grievances.
Every reader of this blog should rush out to read Robert Baer's new book, "The Devil We Know: dealing with the new Iranian superpower". This is the first book I have read that lays out a plausible scenario for how the mess our oil addiction caused, will play out.
It does not end with anything resembling "victory" for the United States.

Did you guys get the CD the "Obsession" in the Herald not too long ago?
That creeps me out that someone paid to package it and send it out. So much hate and stupidity in the world.
I suppose that is Gimmey's point. So much stupidity.
