The Damn Economy: Call Grandma and lie. By Geniusofdespair

Call your grandparents (or retired parents) because they are probably freaking out big-time.

First their nest eggs have probably dwindled by about 50% with the meltdown. And, if they are living off income from CD’s the interest rate is nothing and has just been cut further. Granny is going to have to draw down from a deflated portfolio, eating up principal, to supplement her meager Social Security. So call the Grandparents and lie. Tell Grandparents/Aging Parents not to worry, things will turn around quickly. Here is how I am doing it: “This is a faster world, things move quicker. We will move through this in a year or two.” They need some reassurance. You might also suggest they don’t look at their statements anymore. They are between a rock and a hard place. TLC is the prescription for that swim in murky water. And, instruct them: To not give gifts until further notice.

This economy is one fine mess and will take time to recover, leaving many older people in limbo.
