Do not miss this Blog by Francisco Alvarado in his ongoing web column "Banana Republican"! It is right up our alley: linking county contracts with campaign contributions. Alvarado says:
"The Munillas showered a grand total of $34,000 to reelect Alvarez, Carlos Gimenez, Bruno Barreiro, Audrey Edmonson, Natacha Seijas and Barbara Jordan.
Now why would a local family-owned business feel the urge to splurge so much cash on politicians? Well, MCM Corp. is one of the most proactive construction firms competing for county contracts. This past February, the county commission rejected the lowest bidder and awarded MCM a $125 million contract to do improvements to the Miami International Airport's north terminal."
Great column, go read it!

This is so typical. Let's keep Commissioners out of procurement.
The mayor too.
Munilla's are related to Commissioner Gimenez and Natasha, I believe as well
So typical of Alvarado to fudge the facts. Take a look at the actual item that passed on the airport deal. MCM was actually in competition with OHL-Tower on that contract. Both sides came in with different numbers, and OHL-Tower was lower, but, that was because they were not assuming as much risk, and there was a discrepency with the actual bid document. As a result, the Commission rightfully requested that both bids be renegotiated on an apples to apples basis, and MCM actually ended up as the low bidder.
That is what happens when you rely on yellow journalism for your source of fact...
