Commissioner Pepe Diaz is Off the Hook. by Geniusofdespair

The infamous 2006 fishing trip that Pepe took with the de Cespedes brothers and Developer Sergio Pino, the one the feds and State Attorney have been investigating, well Pepe is off the hook. The Miami Herald said in "Dade commissioner's bonus tied to fraud case":

"Although the U.S. attorney's office won't comment, federal law enforcement officials say Diaz will not be charged in connection with the fishing trip."

All I can say is: POC's unite!

Didn't Carlos DeCespedes, in defending his company's decision to employ Commissioner Diaz say that his overriding reason was to ensure that the Commissioner wouldn't be tempted to act in a corrupt manner because of his salary? Looks like someone should have given Carlos and Jorge a job as well!!!

Dade mayor wants commission to back off growth vote
By MATTHEW I. PINZUR
Eager to avoid a showdown with state growth-management regulators, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez asked the County Commission on Thursday to rescind its approval of two new construction projects in the far west suburbs.
Commissioners have repeatedly approved the projects by a wide enough majority to override Alvarez's veto. But regulators from the Florida Department of Community Affairs said last week that the plans violated the county's own growth regulations as well as various state standards.

While that agency cannot force commissioners to back off, it can freeze the projects until a hearing with an administrative law judge -- which could drag into next year and rack up attorney costs.

If commissioners back off, Alvarez said in a memo, ``it will save taxpayer dollars of both Miami-Dade County and the State of Florida.''

He has consistently opposed expansion beyond the county's Urban Development Boundary. The commission is in recess and not scheduled to meet again until Sept. 2.

He pointed out that the county's own planning staff wanted to reject the projects, which would put Miami-Dade on the awkward legal posture of having to defend against its own studies as well as the state's conclusions.

The two projects are a Lowe's home improvement store at Southwest Eighth Street and 137th Avenue, with adjoining land set aside for a charter school, and a shopping center at Southwest 167th Avenue and Kendall Drive, where developers also promised to build new roads.

But county growth rules generally forbid expanding beyond the development line while there is still enough land inside the boundary for similar projects.

Great move by the Mayor!

And yes DeCespedes said he was hiring (Diaz) him so he would not steal from the taxpayers. He also said that if the Commissioner's salary increases ever goes through he would fire him, because he is not too bright. Real comforting thoughts by this guy.

Pepe Diaz is a complete slime bucket. He was well known for years by County gov. insiders for his taxpayer-paid junkets around the world until the Mia. Herald finally exposed fake reports by his staff and an embarassed commission put an end to it. One of his final trips was a $15,000 spree funded by the Seaport budget for him and 3 of his cronies. He also got press as a Sweetwater politician for a free tummy-tuck by an insurance company Sweetwater was about to hire at City expense. His recent attempts to have County Government Insurance cover just about anyone a County employee wants to include, you can bet has some behind-the-scenes dealings that he will benefit from. Someone should take care of this pig.
