Florida, U.S. Sugar strike $1.7 billion deal for farmland to restore Everglades. From the article:
Officials from U.S. Sugar Corp. and the South Florida Water Management District are expected to announce a $1.7 billion deal Tuesday that would give ownership of a vast swath of the historic Everglades on sugar cane land south of Lake Okeechobee to the state.
Sources knowledgeable about the deal confirmed today that the state and the South Florida Water Management District would purchase some assets of U.S. Sugar Corp., including more than 185,000 acres south of Lake Okeechobee to the Everglades.
The cost to the state and water management district is expected to be about $1.7 billion, although the transaction will probably take place in stages over at least the next five years, sources said.

There is a video attached to the thread, which I suspect was filmed by the protesters. I really don't think the video bolsters their cause.
Watch the video, and tell me, what normal person would chose to support these people in their mission?

Does this mean we are going to have more sugar from the island to the south?
More improtant, does this mean that Big Sugar is going to be off the hook for cleaning up the polluted environment?
We really need to be cutting processed sugar out of our diets (literally and figurately). Just like alternative energy, maybe we need alterantive sweeteners, like honey -- oh, wait, we are eliminating bees -- OK, like corn -- no wait, that's getting kind of expensive. How about sugar beets? Can you grow sugar beets in Florida? No wait - we are eliminating farm land too. Screw it, I'm going on the Atkins Diet. I can't deal with all this stuff.
