Last time around Sosa voted NO on these same 2 applications to move the Urban Development Boundary. I was too busy to listen to her reasoning. Anyone have an answer about what she was thinking or if she was thinking?Voting no on the two applications were Sally Heyman, Katy Sorenson, Dennis Moss and Carlos Gimenez. Next it goes to the Mayor for a possible veto. And, then it will go for lawsuits.
I expected the Vile Natacha Seijas, Dim Bruno Barreiro, Diaz, Martinez and Souto to vote yes. But the really, really dumb ones are: Edmonson, Rolle and Jordan. They are too stupid (or crooked) to realize this hurts their districts in the long run. You would think after the train funding fiasco they might have smartened up. No such luck. You three: You ain't ever going to get that train as long as we do Westward Ho!

I can only assume that she has aspirations to run for Mayor in 2012, although I don't know why she thinks she possibly has a chance. Her chief of staff is smart enough to know better than to think she can win. What with her mastery of the language and all. She is lining up the big money donors.
It will get vetoed, and then, it will get overidden. Then it's in the hands of the court and the state.

I think Sosa has some aspirations for a run at Mayor in 2012 and thinks she is lining up donors. But all she really did was kill any chance she ever had at crossover voters, which you need to be Mayor.
Does she really think that another Hispanic will not run against her and split the spanish vote? She has exactly zero crossover appeal.

This is just unbelieveable. I love Commissioner Edmonson's reasoning that the way to be an environmentalist is to pave over our wetlands. What brilliance! This is one more stain on Miami-Dade county -- I'm ashamed to be a resident. So much talk about our "children" and yet their are destroying whatever future they might have.
Enough money will get anyone to change their vote.
Some of the people speaking today were so small minded. They looked at life from their cocoons not caring about the larger picture. "I need a store", "I need a school", "I need a road." "I", "I", and more "I." It is too bad people are like that. I wonder what will happen to them when drinking water gets to its real cost and they have to pay it, and gas escalates to the point where everything in S. Florida is unaffordable for them in these Western Suburbs.It will cost the family $15 or $20 dollars a day to drive to and from work. No health insurance... Little by little, Miami will evolve into a place only affordable by the rich.

On Spanish TV Sosa's reasoning was that "it's not the same to vote for a development than for a school". The School Board hasn't even studied the possibility of building a school on the promised lot, and all the fools that were staged to support the Lowe's project were already sending their children to the "new school". It took the School Board almost 8 yrs. to build a school in our very populated area, how do those people expect to get a school in such a speedy manner? Besides, if citizens choose to eliminate school taxes by swaping them for a higher sales tax come November, are they going to pay to build their school? So, their arguments in favor were as empty as their heads!
also, the land is not free...they are paying for it.
From what I hear, Sosa and Martinez are running for Mayor in 2012, without a doubt. Natasha has indicated that this is her last go around as well. Souto is said to be considering retirement as well (about time) in 2010.
This year, you have, in my opinion, one viable candidate going up against a sitting Commissioner. Val Screen vs. Edmonson. Edmonson is a mental midget, and she needs to go. Val is a smart, tenacious attorney, who has done wonderful work at the Virginia Key Trust. The Range family will likely support her, and their support is huge in that district. In addition, Edmonson's god-mother, Dr. Carey-Shuler, has been very quiet, and from what I understand, has moved to Delray Beach. That leaves a void.
As to the remaining Commissioners up this year:
(1) Jordan - No issues
(3) Edmonson - See above
(5) Bruno - No issues
(7) Gimenez - No issues
(9) Moss - No issues
(11) Martinez - 2 opponents, but no real issues
(13) Natasha - No issues
2012 could be a watershed year to really place better people in office. There is a chance that Edmonson will be gone by then, along with Souto (retirement), and I can see the Govenor Rolle in a pickel soon. Sosa and Martinez are going to give up their seats to run for Mayor. Who knows, if it is just Sosa and Martinez, Gimenez might decide to end the madness, and run the County himself as Mayor(that would be a welcome change).
The point is, there will be opportunities to replace these people. I think most readers believe that Edmonson has to go. I would urge you then to support Val Screen in whatever way you can. You have to make the most of it when one of these "bad" Commissioners are facing a tough re-election battle.
Shame on the 9 commissioners who DID NOT GET IT! They were foaming at the mouth for six hours yesterday waiting for the moment when they could vote to further deplete our water supply, destroy future well fields, expand the traffic gridlock and put yet another lackluster development into the Everglades.
There was absolutely no substantial evidence or public purpose for the way they voted to expand the Urban Development Boundary Line.
There was a slick presentation by the lobbyist for Lowe's Hardware store. He promised to build a high school in the Everglades next to their big box store. Could that be what convinced them?
Let us hold our breath that one of the 9 WHO DID NOT GET IT yesterday will join the four intelligent commissioner who DID GET IT, and uphold Mayor Carlos Alvarez's veto. Otherwise, let the lawsuits begin.

What is the difference what they grow...
Maybe farmers were too busy farming. Who has time to sit for 6 or 7 hours waiting to be heard and then ignored by Commissioners busy carrying on conversations with each other, aides, on the phone etc.
The charter school people promised to have it open by 2010. That's why all those parents were there.
That is a huge lie. It will take years of DCA litigation to resolve, followed by zoning hearings which take many months before they make it onto a docket. Years of plans and permits and construction. Not to mention many months of review by the environmental departments for wetland permits and fill.
I would guess 2016 at the earliest.
That's assuming it wasn't all BS smokescreen for the hardware store and all the other buildings they're planning for the area.
Lots of farmers, like me, sent in their opposition by e-mail or postcard. An attorney represented the Redland Citizens Association whose membership includes both large and small farmers.
Sosa should run for mayor this time around, can we convince her to give up her seat anytime soon? Really, her district needs a break, just ask the Coral Gables part of it how they feel about her. She has done exactly nothing for us and now with her vote to move the UDB she is willing to screw even her beloved City of W. Miami to get ahead, please leave.
