Noon brainwashing, by gimleteye

Hey it's Friday. Countless readers are tapping on their keyboards, hooked to the internet, lethargic and waiting for the moment to arrive: it's the weekend!

But I can't let the week pass without commenting on the Coconut Grove Playhouse as reported in today's Miami Herald.

There is a move afoot to change leadership and have the Playhouse (overwhelmed by its previous mismanagement) "taken over" by the Performing Arsht Center managers. Here's what Miami city commissioner Marc Sarnoff had to say:

''The city just wants to get a very class act in the Playhouse to run it,'' Sarnoff said, ``so that for the first time in its history it will run efficiently and for a long, sustainable run. There's probably not a better brand than the Arsht Center to do it.''

Um... say what?

As far as I can tell, the Performing Arsht Center is a mess. Still. Read on...

Is Miami so chronically short of brain cells that it has forgotten that the Arsht Center is still groping "for the first time in its histoy" -- short as it may be, and $500 million in the hole-- to be "run efficiently and for a long, sustainable run"?

And, then, what kind of "brand" does the Performing Arsht Center have? I remember when it was the "Carnival" brand, which I called the "carnivorous center of the performing arts". Now THAT was a brand!

The Performing Arsht Center may yet have a brand, with slick young Turks running around pumping their fists-- YES WE CAN!-- and sage advice from other parts and locations.

You have to ask, does anyone do a background check before conferring wisdom to anyone in Miami? Anyone at all?

I think a more suitable name for it might be - Camillus House II

It has does have a similar structure and is close to the vicinity of the first one : )

from what I hear, the new guy they brought down from the Kennedy Center is top notch.

WTF does "top notch" mean? that's just what the abuelas say, about the nutcases they keep returning to office in Hialeah and Miami.

Tap, tap :)

top notch means the guy knows what he is doing and has demonstrated that knowledge at one of the best cultural centers in the world.

as for those abuelas and their crappy candidates...I love it how everyone complains, but no one ever supports anyone to take those fools out.

Until you start cultivating better candidates, contributing heavily to their campaigns, or put on your "big boy" pants and run yourself, you should probably keep your pie hole shut.

Gee, sounds like someone struck close to home.

If that hasn't been written a hundred times on this blog already it wouldn't be so close to home. I am tired of reading it over and over and over.

I have explained over and over how you cannot win. Unless you have Abuela, you ain't got nothing. And try to crash those breakfasts if you aren't connected. There is a strong absentee voting block as well. You can't win. I tried it with a few candidates...it can't be done especially with an incumbent. I could run Ronald Regan, Martin Luther King or Franklin Delano Roosevelt and they would all lose in Miami to Natacha Seijas. That is how stupid it is here.

Oh yeah G.o.D, what about that stuttering, babbling, useless excuse for a County Commissioner you have representing your district? Plus, that commissioner voted to send those UDB applications to Tallahassee.

You don't need to be black or hispanic to win in that district. As a matter of fact, you couldn't win that district if you were.

The condo comando crowd is just as intrenched as the abuelitas. The ghost of trinchi lives.

So why don't you stop being a prfessional complainer, and run for office yourself?

You would think that anyone that could string a coherent statement together could beat your commissioner.

Will your friends at the LBA contribute to G.o.D's campaign?

Katy Sorenson and Carlos Gimenez represent me. I don't know what you are talking about M.

Why don't you run or get off this blog.

P.S. If anyone voted for me they have a screw loose.

P.S.S. The only Commissioners that have any power are the Hispanic Commissioners.

G

they may represent your political philosophy, but I don't think you live in either of their districts.

m

P.S. - I plan on running. I'll be sure to let you know when I do. I have also been financially and physically involved in a pretty large number of races, most winner, but some losers. I guess I shouldn't direct my "get active, or stay quiet" rant at you in particular. I know you're active. But to the other complainers, it still stands.

Get out from behind your keyboards, find a good candidate, and pound the pavement for that person.

Genius, I think Lawrence Wilker is a solid choice for the new PAC director. But I also think it is okay for you to be a little cynical. By nearly accounts, Wilker was the very successful head of the Kennedy Center during the 1990’s. But in a bad business decision, he left his $325k/year job in 2000 to start-up an internet company (showondemand.com), a venture that soon failed. I think that we both hope that the Wilker at our PAC will be the Wilker of the Kennedy Center in the 1990’s and not the showondemand.com Wilker of the early part of the 2000's.
