Lake Okeechobee Water Levels. By Geniusofdespair

I took a ride to lake Okeechobee to see how the levels were. While there I took my usual cache of bad photos. You can almost compare the lake levels in my 2 photos at left (the arrows help). The guy in this second photo just caught this fish which got everyone pretty excited. There were a lot of people fishing on the dock at Pahokee. This one woman with multiple poles and a lot of bait fish said she would be fishing all night because she was planning a party on the weekend and she had a lot of people to feed. Like I would ever do that for my relatives.

Everyone on the dock pointed to where the water should be so you have it from the experts. However, I did check with less seasoned experts (The South Florida Water Management District) and they are saying that as of March 30th, the lake level was at 10.25 feet, more than 4 ft. below its historical average this time of year. So there is no doubt there is still a drought!

Are we competing with bigsugar for the blue gold? Is water management re-flooding the everglades? Is recycled water ok for aquifer replentishment?

Is catfish better boiled or fried?

I think it's great that for the entire winter "dry season" the lake has managed to stay above 10ft. We all know they let out too much water pre-Hurricane Season 2006 because of the fear of failing dikes in the event of a bad storm. What's that old song, there's a hole at the bottom of the sea??

How about the vote in Florida City to allow expansion of rock mining by Atlantic Civil at the top of the Florida Keys? Outrageous!

My mother-in-law lives in Okeechobee and she was telling me that a few months ago there was a problem with broken locks that were letting the water out (and there were quite a few of them) - that should help the drought a bit.
