We have government in the “sunshine” here in Florida, which means you can request and get public records in a timely matter from any public entity. The NEW problem that has cropped up, is they have figured out how to get around it. The catch is mentioned in a Miami Herald article today by Jason Grotto. They now charge you an arm and a leg for sunshine information. The Herald asked for emails for a few years from Sandy Sears' (Longtime Jackson Memorial Staffer) office. I would say that would cost about a hundred or two tops to compile. The paper was told they would have to pay $165,000 for the CD of the emails.
I hope the Herald sues. I have been doing these record requests for years and it never cost more than a hundred — most of the time they were free. The last one I asked for at the County was going to cost me a few thousand dollars. I might like you readers, well most of you (certainly not the one who call me a moron and "Moderate" at times), and I might want to give you accurate information, but not at those kinds of numbers. Let’s encourage the Herald to fight this one so that I can reap the benefit of their litigation and you can keep reading accurate reports here at Eyeonmiami.
