From the Horse's Mouth: What is Florida Power and Light Doing at Turkey Point? By Geniusofdespair

Yes, our future holds seven power plants at Turkey Point!
“Miami Today” September 6th edition, did a profile on Manny Rodriguez of Florida Power and Light. In case you have any question as to what is going on at Turkey Point, we finally have the answers here from the horse's mouth or should I say from the Miami-Dade Regional Director, External Affairs of FP&L:

Question: Are you expanding Turkey Point or replacing it with something new?

Answer: It’s a two-fold program because we are regulated by the State, any time we want to expand our power plants or embark on other large projects, we have to get approval fro the Public Services Commission. -snip-

As one of the alternatives, we’re increasing the output of the four nuclear plants that we have by a total of 400 megawatts. -snip-

In addition to that, we announced to the PSC that we want to build two new nuclear reactors. We’re completing the due diligence, but Turkey Point is at the top of the list.

At Turkey Point, we have two nuclear power plants, we have two fossil plants — they can use either oil or natural gas — and we have a brand-new combined cycle natural gas plant that just went into service in May. We have five plants at Turkey Point and now we’re talking about two new plants.

Miami-Dade certainly is taking on the burden for most of South Florida’s power. Thank us Broward and Palm Beach. All I can say is: KA-BOOM?

With a total of 4 nuclear reactors at Turkey Point
it would be more like:
KA-BOOM
KA-BOOM
KA-BOOM
KA-BOOM

It is not funny for those of us who live in the shadows of the plant. Do you all have the meltdown protection pills your medical chest?

To understand why FPL wants to add capacity in south dade read "Issues Impacting FPL’s Recent Planning Work" starting on page 52 in the "Ten Year Plant Site Plan". You don't have to agree with it but you will get a better understanding about fuel mix and site location. Also note that FPL is looking at "cost-effective renewable sources of generation".

Renewables are not cost effective, you have to pay the price and support them like Germany or Scotland. Or you have to pay the prices like 602 billion dollars (recent GAO est. on war ) and in blood to obtain fossil fuels from places like Iraq. Nothing in life is free, not even oil. Even Saudi oil has its price.
