There is an interview with Carolyn Mitchell today in the Miami Herald. Greener ways to build. She is encouraging Green Building and should be applauded for all her hard work over the years. I found her take on sustainabilty, in the article, worth repeating:
Q. What is sustainability?
A. Sustainability is the opposite of impending collapse. We have all of these natural resources and systems that we depend on. But we are undermining their functionality. The most obvious one is the Everglades. How do we support the functionality of the Everglades, of the air quality, of the social structure?

I like your blog, but I must disagree with you on the sustainability point. First off, the "sustainability" sentence is, literally, meaningless. There's no there there. Second, given the overarching logic of relentless development in Florida (you know, that stuff you always post about) this is just feel-good at the margin stuff. Paving the state with river rock instead of asphalt isn't going to save anything. I'd suggest much more intensive redevelopment of the existing space. Or we can just wait till the system collapses from inefficiency and let the invasives take over after everyone leaves, like Detroit.
Excellent! This is not just a noble effort it is an essential one. We have allowed the once vigorous Environmentalist and Conservationist lobbies to be minimized by international corporate interest. This is an organization that attempts to illustrate that we can and must reconcile corporate profit and environmental sanity. I suggest a lazy generation of greedy consumers remember that and bother to go to the polls on Election Day.
There are certainly many facets to sustainability, but there are also many steps. I wonder why those who promote sustainability have been so late to support Miami 21- really the best effor by the City of Miami to promote sustainable urban core growth.
