Saturday Speakup No. 2 by Geniusofdespair

Anything on your mind that you want to comment on?

In Rebecca Wakefield's ‘More Bang for the Buck’
she says she is not a fan of term limits. I am.

The reason? I think power corrupts so 8 years is plenty. Look at Johnny Winton as a prime example. He started out for the people and moved into a position of contempt. He held grudges. After 8 years he was ripe to go whether he wanted to or not. Rebecca has a different view then mine:

"Term limits have had the effect of forcing the ambitious to rise to leadership quickly and brutally, often well before they are ready. Then they’re out and the next group has a go. Meanwhile, the lobbyists and bureaucrats who stick around actually run the game because they have time to learn it."

The same holds true for the county Rebecca, and they don't have term limits. And, I was told that the ever vile County Commissioner Natacha Seijas was not so bad at the beginning of her county career. I think she morphed into the repugnant human being she is today because she has had one too many power brokers lick her feet.

I agree with Wakefield that we need at large seats. Not going to happen. And the idea of one election -- coordinating County and municipal elections is a good one. Lester Sola, County Election Chief, and I might add one of the most responsive people working for the county, is in favor of this.

Lester answers questions quickly and accurately, he is helpful with my research always. I would vote for him if they decide, with the Charter Changes, to make his position up for election (and they will).

Saturday speakup anyone? People, what's on your mind besides Sunday? It is your opportunity to vent.

Democracy in Action.
At last week’s SHOA meeting, Ms. Warren’s use of Robert’s Rules of Order only briefly delayed her ouster. Commissioners Sarnoff and Sanchez had already left when, towards the end of the meeting, Ms. Steber stood up and again made her motion to remove Warren as president. It was quickly seconded and followed by numerous angry speakers. Ms. Warren and a supporter tried procedural arguments to prevent the vote, but an attorney present, Abbie Cuellar, said the bylaws clearly said the members could take a vote. The vote was taken and a two-thirds majority removed Ms. Warren from the presidency.

The entire world now knows that the poor in our Black communities have been abandoned by their political leadership. The Black leadership simply uses the poor to get money for themselves. If you notice in all those scandals, none of the money that was actually intended for poor people actually went to their intented targets. The politicians, and their professionals simply spend their time concocting ways to get the money for themselves. Because of this dynamic, the Black community is up for grabs.

But they have so little, they are afraid of venturing with others who have also traditionally neglected and hurt them. Although Rolle is a big dissapointment, for the elderly who he provides food everyday in the Meals on Wheels program with his not-for-profit, what are they going to say when their food provider comes to pick them up to take them to the polls? Whatever else he does or doesn't do, at least I am not hungry.

All of these schemes to defraud poor people of money and services that were designed for them, have got to stop. The larger community must see to this. A pattern is now forming. All the schemes involve pulling in out-of-state companies, multi-million dollar no-bid contracts, using double billing to get payments for no work, no accountability or outcomes for payment of services and the like.

Lets see what happens when money actually starts getting into these communities.
