Saturday Speakup by Geniusofdespair

Anyone have anything on their mind? In 300 words or less give us a comment, any subject. This is your opportunity to vent.

Dare I vent? I went to Sushi Siam. White couple gets a check. Black couple gets a check except theirs was graced with a big red stamp saying: 15% tip not included. Discrimination. I think so. I brought it up to the Manager and they did not care. Won't eat there again, and I like the food.

Don't post longer please than 300 words but feel free to vent, no personal attacks.

Mayor Manny Diaz said today that the stores had a responsibly to clean up the downtown. What about code enforcement Manny? You have it the wrong way around. You must clean up the downtown, they must maintain their exterior. You must have police in the downtown at night. You are being negligent.

Why nothing in the blog this past week on the Hearld story on Jul. 18 “Fight looms on Dade's proposed cuts to service groups” BY CHARLES RABIN?

What about the info on our Commissioners:
Alvarez's plan, part of the $222 million in cuts he announced last week, is creating a rumpus among some of the county's 13 commissioners -- some of whom have long, close ties and receive paychecks from the private, nonprofit groups that receive the money:

•Commissioner Dorrin Rolle earns $179,253 a year as executive director of the James E. Scott Community Association, or JESCA, which received $645,000 this year from the county.

• Dennis Moss makes $59,660 a year as executive director of the Richmond/Perrine Optimist Club, which received $305,300.

• Natacha Seijas earns $52,499 yearly as vice president of public policy and government relations for the YMCA of Greater Miami, which received $85,000.

• Even the mayor has ties to a ''CBO,'' as the community-based organizations are known. Alvarez's sister Cristina Penedo is executive director of the Southwest Social Services Program, which was allocated $255,000 this year. Additionally, the mayor gave the agency $10,000 the past two years from his office budget, money that was matched by federal funds.

Does not seem to be a conflict here does there?
Give CBO money.
Take back large part back as pay.

Thanks, all good points. yes, we don't like it either. Already the speak-up is worthwhile!!!

I don't like money going to many of these service groups because they are the ones who keep these crappy commissioners in office and EVEN employ them! How nutty is that? I don't mind unfunding them, but it will never happen. Commissioners would be cutting off their meal tickets and their most loyal base.

Why do people have to teach their dogs tricks by yelling commands at 7 in the morning??? Look around dog-walkers! Are you near any houses? Could people be trying to sleep?????

As tasteless as the restaurant tab was to the black couple, it was probably a reaction to a perception that African-Americans tip little to nothing to employees whose livelihood depends on gratuities.
No, I don't have hard empirical evidence, only countless stories from food service workers who have told me this in different parts of the nation.
I've also heard anecdotes of waiters/waitresses who dread having blacks assigned to their tables because of the lack of gratutity. In this case, perception is reality.
The black couple should not frequent the restaurant again. Unfortunately, they are marked by members of the food service industry because of the callousness of others.

I think people should be thinking of ways M-D County and City of Miami can reduce their budgets. Latest info from insurance companies indicate much higher insurance premiums. Property taxes are too high. Government budgets are too bloated.

I love the arguments between the pro and anti nuclear environmentalists.

I love to the analysis of the power structure in Miami. (It is what the Herald would occasionally do but no more.)

I love the analysis of the Latin elite who rule us.

I love the attempts to understand the other side of life in one of America's poorest cities.

I love the discussions that attempt to find common ground between the different economic, cultural, racial, ethic, and religious groups that inhabit South Florida.

Most of all I love the eye on Miami, because nobody does it better!!!

Thank you reader, I too love the nuclear pro and con, I think the pro's are great, and as i con I too am doing a bangup job. With honest dialogue comes understanding. Maybe not agreement but understanding.
