Only in our wacky Miami! Geniusofdespair

I am not making this up I swear.

In Mickey Mouse bribes cheesier than Miami's Columnist Fred Grimm (in the Miami Herald) says that Northern Florida corruption has nothing on Miami -- small scale by comparison. He reports:

"So much untoward behavior among public officials has broken out just north of here that The Palm Beach Post termed it ``the Miamification of Palm Beach County. With all the accompanying political corruption and melodrama that implies.''

In the Miami Herald today there is a story on Aggressive vagrants a tough reality for condo owners. Apparently people bought half million dollar and up condos only to be confronted with vagrants that are bold and harassing. That is not the interesting part. The really interesting part is about the sex offenders. The article states:

"Foremost in everyone's mind at the meeting were the sex offenders living under the nearby causeway."

"Darrell Nichols, an Upper Eastside neighborhood resource office said the ex-cons were tucked under a bridge farther east along the Tuttle than most Blue residents originally thought."

"They are very closely monitored,'' he assured neighbors, "and every day they are visited by an officer at about 4 or 5 a.m., and they have to be there. That bridge is basically their legal address.''

Let's get this straight, we have a bunch of sex offenders living under a bridge and the City knows about it, visits them every day and, in fact, treats the area under the bridge as their legal address? Do they get mail service there: "Sex Offender Joe Blow, Under the Causeway, Miami 33133"?

Only in Miami can you drive over your sex offenders every day.

This is why I read your blog. Instead of focusing on the surprised ( and seemingly whiny ) ownewrs of condos at Blue, you have chosen to focus on the fact that there are sex offenders living under the JT Causeway, helped there by the City of Miami..This is the stuff Carl Hiassen's books are made of..truer than any fiction could ever come up with..Exactly where does one begin with this? Anyone traversing the causeway with kids in tow should remember that if they should brake down and have to pull over, keep the kids in the car! All courtesy of your local government.

And I'm really sorry about all the typos above!

This is actually a pretty old story and it is sad to hear that it hasn't been resolved.

As you may know, most (if not all) local jurisdictions passed regulations that prohibit sex offenders from living within a certain distance from schools, etc.

The end result was that there was a group of registered offenders who literally could not legally live anywhere in the City of Miami. One location actually far enough away from a school, etc. was under the Julia Tuttle (your photo does not show the correct location, by the way). Hence, the state lets them live out there.

Everyone recognizes the absurdity of the situation but which local government is going to be the first to back down and thereafter get written up as "pro" sex offender?

You guessed it, no one is going to budge and these guys are going to stay where they are or move out of South Florida.

NOTE I PUT IN A QUESTION MARK.What are you a perfectionist. I don't actually care where they live.

I have been under a bridge where homeless people live (key biscayne causeway right after the toll both. They were very polite, cordially asking me if i wanted a drink. I was rescuing a windsurfer at the time. The area reeked or the smell of urine. It was pretty.... what is the word: ICK. Many people under this bridge, live their permanently as well. I sw about 6 or 7 men.

Ahhh.. so much for social solidarity, wonder why we have so much crime, no one cares for our community, there is no community spirit! Letting human beings sleep under a bridge really should not be an acceptable situation. But I guess since we have no shame anymore its ok. So why is stealing from the government not ok too? Might as well screw who you can to get ahead because no one cares for you and you should care for no one, eh? Besides since the government is not in the business of taking care of people than stealing from it is ok. Thank god we are a christian nation.
