Your Tax Dollars at the Port by Geniusofdespair

Bill Johson director of the Port of Miami said in "Miami Today" that the Port of Miami is headed for Bankruptcy. They are having to absorb $19 million of security expenses. Johnson said, according to the paper:

Our operating costs are way out of line and the port's security costs are highest in the nation.

Well, whose fault is that Bill? Anyway, I thought you might be interested in another example of your tax dollars at work. Besides, you don't see FP&L complaining about guarding all that spent nuclear fuel they are storing on site since they have no place to send it. No complaints there. I would suppose FP&L is doing an adequate job guarding it? I sure hope they do a better job with that than they did with that mysterious drill hole they found in a pipe at the nuke plant. I don't think FP&L really wants you to know of the storage situation, they aren't blasting their security costs to the world like Johnson is. Someday I am going to try to get on site to see if their security is any good. I was able to get past all the guards at the various rock mines. How hard could it be to get to the nuclear power plant?

Ya better watch out for the little guys with the sub-machine guns out at FPL. They may take nuclear waste more serious than you are assuming, and get jumpy when they see a person be-bopping along out there.

Let's discuss Bill Johnson. What were his last positions at the county. Were they the airport, the performing arts center and now the port? Has he rescued any of them?

No, he is a bull in a china shop. How about he stop paying all that overtime. Why not hire regular workers on shifts?

I think you should try, it would be a good test of security. Let us know how you do.

I think there would not be much blogging from the jailhouse.

I guess I will have to go out there and check it out. Here is how, first I will get a job as a food service worker. I heard you get a pass that way. I was reading on the Nuclear regulartory website, some of these food people were using the badges/passes after they were fired. I think that is an open door. Don't know where it would get me...but that is a place to start. I don't think they machine gun food people -- food is in demand when you are bored, just hanging out with a rifle. I could use candy bars, they are always popular.

When I was last there, before 9/11, food was prepared and served outside the "High Security" need to be badged for unescorted access area. Things may be different today. If you do want to have unescorted access be prepared to pass drug and alcohol screening, psychological tests and evaluations, former employer checks, education records, an FBI criminal history and credit histories. This was done before 9/11. I’m sure that after 9/11 things got even tighter. Also you will sit through days of training on just how to behave, what to do in case of an emergency, etc. its not to be taken lightly. One day as I was walking in the restricted area I stepped over a painted line marking the approach to one of the security fences. I was halted by a guard in a tower with a shot gun pointed at me ordering me back away from the line. Just because you have unescorted access does not mean you have the run of the plant. You only have access to areas where you need to go. Again this was before 9/11 so if you want to go and get a job there, pass all the testing and training and then try and still go into an area you should not be in, go ahead, you may need someone to remove the shotgun pellets to say the least.

It is obvious that someone who passed all the above drilled a hole in a pipe, so nothings perfect. So maybe you could do all the above and enter the spent fuel storage area, now what, plant a bomb? Drill motors are allowed in but you do not carry them in they along with all things brought into the restricted are cleared through security. Getting yourself in is one problem, getting something in to do great harm is a whole lot harder.

By the way I would be careful posting even humorous remarks about any Nuc plant security breaches, it may come back to haunt you.

I didn't post the breaches, that information is on the government website. It tells you a lot by really reading the records from each plant. Very good reading...it might scare you even!

Thanks X-FPLER - i always enjoy your posts and learn a lot. I would never pass the psychological tests. It appears I will have to give up my idea of hosting a party in September, above a drum/cask of spent fuel.
