Proposed express lanes on I-95 could cost as much as $6 per trip. Reporter Michael Turnbell said:
“By the end of the year, drivers could begin buying their way out of traffic jams on a 21-mile stretch of northbound Interstate 95 between Miami and Fort Lauderdale.”
I think he meant to say: Rich drivers. Twelve dollars a day, $60.00 a week, that is a bit pricey for the average Joe. I guess only rich people will get work on time.
Developer sues activists for fighting 42-story condo next to Stranahan House. Speaking of rich drivers, billionaire Jorge Perez (will he always be in the fast lane?) and his Related Group are in the news yet again! Related Group is the company trying to build the 3 towers at Mercy Hospital in Miami. Guess those oposed to the Mercy Hospital Buildings are going to see a slapp suit as well. Watch out! Wikipedia definition of a slapp suit:
“A Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation ("SLAPP") is a form of litigation filed by a large organization or in some cases an individual plaintiff, to intimidate and silence a less powerful critic by so severely burdening them with the cost of a legal defense that they abandon their criticism. The acronym was coined in the 1980s by University of Denver professors Penelope Canan and George W. Pring. One marker of a SLAPP suit is whether the costs outweigh the claimed damages by a large amount, for instance, damages of a few hundred dollars and costs in the tens of thousands. Lawyers are thought to be particularly conflicted in SLAPP suits, since a marginal case can lead to high legal charges, and they are encouraged to run up costs by their clients.”
According to the article:
"The suit alleges misdeeds ranging from civil conspiracy to defamation, complaining that activists called the developer 'greedy' in fliers and said Related was 'trying to destroy the Stranahan House,' Broward County's oldest structure."
Why would anyone call a developer greedy? for shame.

OK we always knew what kind of person Jorge Perez is. Now the public should be looking for ways to slap his wrist. Of course he is far too rich to hurt but if every step he takes know is opposed and when possible he is sued to at least delay what he wants the results may be good. Even the politicians he buys may think about whether they should continue bowing down to him.
Maybe it is time to start lobbying Tallahassee that together with the insurance issue relating to hurricanes and floods, they should also look into creating an insurance fund for legal fees for homeowners to fight for their rights and protect their single investment, their homes, from big developers like Related.
Narrowing the lanes on I-95
means the car that just missed crashing into you, will.
Once we get the rich jerks onto their own private raceway, there will be more room for the rest of us on the road. Are you REALLY going to miss that BMW riding your tail and flashing his lights at you because you're only doing 80?
Was that you? Sorry Chris, I didn't know it was you up in front.
Did you see the recent photo of Jorge Perez wearing a hard hat, Yellow Shirt and placing his hands in wet cement?
There he is leaving his mark for all eternity just like that of other debonair Latino stars such as Ricardo Montalban.
Do you happen to recall what he did to win this honor and award?
Was it for the dubious distinction of pouring the most cubic tons of cement, then the other nominees in that category?
I am sorry thst I was not in attendance at the recent Cement Laying Walk of Fame Ceremony.
But I am confident that in his thank you speech he must have given ample credit for his success to all those good folks in City and County Governments, lobbyists and attorneys that believed in him and his dream of achieving stardom.
No one likes a bitter looser and there is less sympathy for a bitter winner.
Did you happen to read that Jorge and his high priced lawyers are threatening community activists and their representatives with SLAPP suit (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation) and John Doe class-action lawsuits for perceived lost revenues? Ref. Brittany Wallman titled Developer sues activists for fighting 42-story condo next to Stranahan House (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/broward/sfl-chyde12may15,0,6544666.story).
Why does Jorge his Related Group and their muscle now wish to intimidate the public and encourage them to back away from future zoning and building fights?
Are they auditioning to be cast in the sequels to the Sopranos, Casino or Goodfellows films?
Why is Jorge so angry about community activist anyway?
Aren’t they only so much rabble being a nuisance and just slowing him down a bit?
Wouldn’t you think that Lucia at Greenburg Traurig Law Firm has helped Jorge win enough of their 80% or 90% of upzoning requests?
Do they really need to win 100% of the time?
Perhaps by their actions they should just declare to the people…
“Let Them Eat Cake” or “Let them Live In The Shadows of My Highrise.”

Harry, you ask a lot of questions, I think we know the answers.
I have seen renderings of Mr. Perez's development, ICON, and it blends in very well with its surroundings, including the Stranahan House. It's not like this site is in the middle of the Everglades, it's in the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale for goodness sake. And what was there before was a run-down abandoned supermarket built in the suburban style that went contrary to everything we know about building in an urban core. It was abandoned -- it was an eyesore. Now Las Olas will have the streetwall that it needs facing it, instead of a parking lot.
The contrast between historic and contemporary can be striking and beautiful. The Stranahan House gets improved access via an extended and improved public riverwalk, almost like a pocket park. And, Broward gets a new tallest building out of the deal that has street interaction. Can't wait to see it built.
Last Anon: Are you Jorge's publicist?
