News of the week in Miami, winners and losers by gimleteye

Monday: The $460 million Carnival Performing Arts Center lost more than $610,000 in its first three months according to Miami Today. Its first year budget projected a loss of only $550,000. Operating costs turn out to be nearly twice the national average.

Tuesday: Miami Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez leads a successful county-wide referendum to approve a charter amendment creating a strong mayor. Although only 14 percent of voters cast their ballot, 100 percent of county commissioners are angry. Loser: downtown lobbyists, down but not for the count.

Wednesday: Miami Dade county commissioners—tarred by ethical lapses and corruption scandals—pass an ordinance prohibiting the corruption unit of the Miami Dade Police Department from joining investigations of the County Commission. Loser: citizens.

Thursday: The Miami diocese of the tax-exempt Catholic Church benefits from the Miami City Commission’s decision to rezone valuable property it owns to become 300 dwellings only mega-millionaires can afford. Greenberg Traurig lead the effort to garner three votes and over-turn a rejection by the City’s own zoning panel.

Friday: The Miami Herald reports on the dismal 2006 real estate market. Single-family home sales, down 21 percent, not counting busted sales or owners sitting on property they want to sell. In the month of December, condo sales fell 36 percent. Winners: anyone who sold in 2006. Losers: anyone who has to sell in 2007.

Talk about nonsense, in watching the county commission meeting, I could not believe these people want to hear from the mayor prior to their voting. Are they capitulating on their elected responsibility? They are upset at the vote and referred to it several times, the PAC is another make jobs for friends deal as is most of their activity. No public corruption unit to investigate county hall activity, they want their own media outlet to control the truth, do they realize the truth can't be controlled? lastly, they assume no resonsibility for anything such as Mr. Martinez's comment to George Burgess that that type of thing happened about a year after you were on the job and is no reflection of you. Attention, yes it is key words; you were on the job. Yikes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

City of Miami Commissioners screwed up on the Mercy Hospital rezoning vote. "Dumb as a brick" Michelle Spence-Jones was allowed to vote. She actually voted to take away almost 7 acres from Mercy Hospital so Related can build luxury condos with prices starting at $2.5 Mil. Has Spence-Jones ever visited the Mercy site? Guess Spence-Jones's constituents needed more luxury housing? And luckily no one from her district needs a hospital. Funny after five hours of testimony, Spence-Jones still lacking "clarity" on basic land use issues.
