Eye On Miami at a Glance by geniusofdespair

It is interestng to see what readers comment on the most:
Sarnoff, Farm Bureau, Banker Bill, Hialeah Racetrack, Strong Mayor Debate, Edie Laquer in that red dress. Can't figure out the readership yet.

Let me just throw out a few city and county lobbyist names for you (that I know) as this is almost the YEAR OF THE LOBBYIST (see previous post today).

Maybe there will be some opinions for all of you to express on these lobbyists:
Lucia Dougherty, Carrie Meek, Felix Lasarte, Neisen Kasdin, Seth Gordon, Sergio Pereira, Ines Marrero-Priegues, Brian May, Juan Mayol, Alan Krischer, Michael Freire, Simo Ferro, Miguel De Grandy, Jeffrey Bercow, Clifford Schulman...and the list goes on and on...do you have your own favorite?

Let us get ready to celebrate the 200th year of this fine American tradition - Lobbying.

Note this is a list, I have not expressed an opinion so don't kill the messenger if your pal is/isn't listed.

Lucia is a fixture at the City of Miami -- she represents just about everybody. Don't know the county lobbyists. Carrie Meek is a lobbyist?

Yep, Carrie meek is a registered lobbyist for Lennar Developers. She lobbied for building on the newly annexed Florida City wetlands
way down by Card Sound Road.
Sad isn't it?

She is a trying to make some money in her old age.

Brian May, another sell out Democrat, or at least former Democrat.

N. Kasdin, so he is/was president of Urban Land Institute, mayor of Miami Beach, all advocates of well planned communities and then..... he supports moving the UDB....only one thing can be said... what a whore they all are when someone waves cash in front of their faces!

Carrie Meek and Neisan Kasdin are the biggest sell-outs. Meek represents rock mining companies and Kasdin represents sleazy developers who want to pave the Everglades. Kasdin also arranged for the $169 Mil from the taxpayers and got Manny Diaz and Linda Haskins to give it to the Midtown Miami developers. In 2006 the Midtown Miami developers returned the favor by giving Haskins dozens of checks for her losing campaign.

I actually dont oppose "giving" money to urban developers. I would hope that we the citizens could get some affordable housing, etc. out of it, but the alternative to difficult, timeconsuming, nimby-nazi infested urban development is paying the everglades. Kasdin and Meek can do all they want for urban developers but why are they screwing their own "roots" and people to pave the everglades, well because they are crooks!

Why do seemingly smart people get so snarled up in understanding the the Midtown Miami deal? That was a very smart, effective and extraordinarily CHEAP way for the City to get a useless and ugly 56-acre tract of land that would never have been developed converted into an attractive urban neighborhood.

The City issued $168 millions worth of bonds to allow the Midtown Group to develop the infrastructure (utilities, roads, sewers, etc.) needed if the area was ever going to become productive. The new residential and retail development will generate additional property taxes above and beyond the amount that would have been generated if the area was not developed. These incremental taxes – generated because of the development – will be used to retire the $168 million in bonds issued to fund the infrastructure……at NO cost to taxpayers.

Pretty smart.

Midtown Miami a SMART move?
Get real!!
That property could have been put to much better use as AFFORDABLE Housing.
As it is now, big box stores and condos (more overpriced condos)are costing the Citizens of Miami a fortune in future lost tax revenue.
Think of the all opportunities that were squandered so that Concrete Manny, Linda the loser and Johnny Witless could make some under the table bonuses.
And btw has anyone attempted to drive thru or near that part of town lately? The gridlock and dirt are horrendous.

Midtown Miami. What a joke. Anyone tried driving that area lately? It now takes 30 minutes to cross NE 36th Street on NE 2nd Avenue, and it will get worse. No planning, just greed. Cane Succe the sandwich shop on NE 35th Street just closed. The traffic and dust caused its business to drop 40%. Space now empty, employees gone.

Miami-Dade County and the City of Miami gave the Midtown Miami developers $169 Mil in tax breaks. Then they force the taxpayers to pay to park in the garage the taxpayers funded AND the promoter is trying to sell the mess for $300+ Mil. Midtown Miami developers just wrote dozens of checks to Manny Diaz's stooge Linda "tax and spend" Haskins. Smells like another PAC $450 Mil losing fiasco.

It may not be a great deal but would you rather seen your 6 Billion Miami Dade Bonds for Building a Better Community go towards expanding development opportunities outside of the UDB or Midtown Miami. Remember folks you can't have it both ways!

Anonymous said...

Now, someone needs to take the list of corporations and track the principals...

Where is Shiver? He is a playmate.

Anonymous said...

I love it environmentalists in Love with their cars! Too much traffic in a city! Well then clearly if we all lived really spread-out with no central city we would have no traffic right?

Anonymous said...

Nobody "wants it both ways". Everyone ethical wants a Miami-Dade county and a City of Miami without corruption. Giving away the taxpayers money, no show jobs and paving the Everglades is corrupt.

The reality is urban development is more expensive than suburban development. To do high density affordable development in the city right is expensive often needs support.

However, that being said, what is wrong with retail in Midtown Miami? Should big boxes be built in suburban areas with oceans of parking? Should we outlaw big boxes and force everyone to shop at worker-owned co-ops like Rainbow Market in SF? Is this going to work here? Just look at the Home Depot in Coconut Grove and see how nimbies refuse city locations for new locations of any shopping/living/working facilities. What is wrong with placing these facilities in the city where the people should be?

Anonymous said...

There is nothing wrong with shopping that serves the community. But why should the taxpayers pay $169 Mil to a private developer? Because someone well connected paid off someone well connected. Does the corner store owned by Joe Blow get $1 Mil to buy his site and pay for his parking? No, of course not.

Why won't the politicans get the FEC Corridor people mover plan funded? That could provide public transportation to 200,000 people per day? It borders Midtown Miami. Would not that be a better use of our tax money?

I think what they did with Midtown was fantastic will attract people to the area for a shpping experience....

Finally you have a village where people will be able to hag out and condos w incredible views..

Those who don't like it are renters who will see their rents go higher in the area because of its beautification..

You can move to Fort Lauderdale...
