NIMBY People I am getting sick of you! by geniusofdespair

Nimby means: Not in my backyard. I am angry this morning, watch out, I have a bug up my ass!

Many people support more development and more people for the County BUT not where they themselves live. Some cities are up in arms over the Watershed Study. The communities are saying: Send those masses somewhere else in Miami: Your neighborhood not mine. Well guess what people, we are running out of neighborhoods to send people. The City of Miami is not the dumping ground for everyone -- have you seen the Sarnoff Landslide? The people there are saying: "ENOUGH ALREADY." Readers, you elect the same crappy commissioners that fix your potholes but do not address the problems of growth management in the entire community. Most of the Commission wouldn't recognize good land-use planning if they were hit over the head with it with a sledge hammer. Instead they lick the boots of developers and kiss the asses of those shitty lobbyists that promote growth without a conscience. Just look at what Gimleteye wrote today: Barbara Jordan is making it optional for developers to participate in setting aside affordable units. Gimme a break!

To all you stupid Nimby people: The Community is your problem too. You can't just sit around sipping your cafe con leche or your Latte and complain when problems face your neighborhood because every neighborhood is facing them. You become the problem when you only look at it from within your selfish little bubble. You have to do more then complain when the problems hit your neighborhood. We are ONE big giant neighborhood, help us all. Don't let the Herald break us up into those Neighbor's Section, neighborhoods. Did you know that Coral Gables has it's own section now so they can read about other rich people and not be burdened with the problems of the poor surrounding them.

Share the burden. If you all hate density so much -- tell ALL the Commissioners. Tell them you don't want to grow without infrastructure in place first for the whole of the County. I don't care what you tell them -- as long as it is not Nimby crap. Be heard. Vote for the Strong Mayor. Do your part somehow. I just ask you to think in the larger framework of the whole of the county instead of only addressing your little piece of paradise.

Ohhh, I am so mad!

I am printing a letter I found in the Herald on line (It was in Neighbor's I presume) that Commissioner Katy Sorenson wrote. I think you should all read it. It is in the comment section.

Letter written by Commissioner Katy Sorenson:
Posted on Sun, Dec. 10, 2006 - Miami Herald

Soapbox / Letters From Readers

Many people have called and written to express their concerns about the South Miami-Dade Watershed Study. I want to assure everyone that I share their interest in the long-term viability of our community's quality of life and environmental health. I also have many questions about the Watershed Study recommendations that I will be addressing with the technical team staff and members of the advisory committee.

Although land use seems to have been the primary focus of the study, water is rapidly becoming a more limiting factor for sustainable growth within Miami-Dade. And while I have been an outspoken advocate for smart growth along the transit corridor of U.S. 1, I do not believe that we can perpetuate even good alternatives like those urban center plans indefinitely.

People should keep in mind that the watershed study is just that -- a study. It in itself is not a policy, it does not change the Master Plan, does not rezone properties and does not curtail municipalities from steering their own planning processes. The study, once completed and once the advisory committee makes its recommendations, will be presented to the Board of County Commissioners. Once the report is accepted, there may be direction to the manager to develop legislation based on some or all of the recommendations, or none.

I have fought hard to bring schools, parks, roads and transit as required components of new residential developments, and have succeeded in getting these important public improvements designed into many new developments. I will continue to demand that the public be an integral part of any development plan reviewed by the county. Land use planning is one of the most important jobs we do as a County Commission as we continue to suffer the consequences of bad planning decisions from decades past.

I will be evaluating the report in its entirety once transmitted to the Board of County Commissioners, and will be looking for opportunities to protect our environment, agricultural lands, water quality and quality of life for our children and grandchildren through the 2050 study horizon.

It is my hope that citizens will continue to provide input and stay engaged in the discussion.

KATY SORENSON

MIAMI-DADE
COUNTY COMMISSIONER,

Genius: Maybe Miami Dade County is through growing. It doesn't have the water for drinking and the Everglades. It doesn't have anymore land unless we want to destroy agriculture.

When will they say stop? It is unpopular in some circles to say stop.

Yes the economy is based on growth, but with growth you have more expenses. So are you really ever getting ahead. If as you say, there is 7 billion of unfunded infrastructure: that is a big expense that is not figured into the increased revenue accounting of growth. Maybe we actually LOSE money when we grow. What are the real costs of growth? Only developers benefit. Maybe the affordable housing dilemma is a market correction? Everyone says: we can't stop people from coming but the market is doing just that.

The watershed study is being misrepresented by elected officials that see this as an easy way to earn political capital. If you want to be critical of the watershed - then at least get the facts first. Some of the municipalities along US 1 (like Pinecrest and Palmetto Bay) are opposing watershed on lies. They are not being asked to absorb tens of thousands of units, the watershed envisions as little as 2000 residential units (or less) in some of these areas OVER THE NEXT 50 YEARS!!! If the folks in those cities think they are not even going to get that number of units over the next 5 years under the current growth policies, they are sadly mistaken. The watershed is a vision for a brighter future for everyone and for Biscayne Bay. The watershed committee must approve it and our commissioners must as well...

Thank you - you two anonymous people. I am over my Nimby ranting.

Maybe Katy Sorenson has it right when she talks about sustainability:

"...water is rapidly becoming a more limiting factor for sustainable growth within Miami-Dade. And while I have been an outspoken advocate for smart growth along the transit corridor of U.S. 1, I do not believe that we can perpetuate even good alternatives like those urban center plans indefinitely."

The water issue is not going away. And what the hell are we doing with the wastewater? How many more people can we sustain without driving every person into a nimby frenzy. It will come to that. Everyone has to put the pieces of the puzzle together to realize that we are all in the same boat: mad at the crap going on.

If you all would go back to my FDOT posts (Just put FDOT in the search in the top left corner on the main page) you will understand why we are all so cranky.

The entire county is going to be gridlock. Not just the inner city...the whole damn county. There will not be a workable mass transit system any time soon because the County is not designed for it - we are sprawled. We will be gridlocked in traffic driving under 15 mile an hour on almost every major road in the county. LOOK AT THE MAPS I POSTED.

How these 3 posts passed you all by is amazing to me. I should have had a hundred comments. I think that they were my most important blogs. Look at the maps, they are truly scary. And they effect everyone in Pinecrest, in Coral Gables, in Miami Lakes, etc. in every damn city in Miami Dade County.

Dear Anonymous:
Regarding your future flooding scenario:
We are Floridians. We do not worry about the future. You must not be from around here. Besides we have a lot of know how on filling in swamps.

That's what we do. Fill thousands of acres of wetlands every year. Let the water come. We fear it not.

I just read this and wanted to vomi. Sorenson is the weakest commissioner and I am tired of the rhetoric. let her fill others with her bull.

She wanted a raise in taxes. Fought against public billboards when the city mayors were asking for a cap on insurance. Signed to create homes for close to 600,000 along us1, watershed study and all. Has done nothing to decrease traffic. Crime is up. It's great to protect the environment but nothing happening at homestead air force base and she sure is quick to change zoning for manny diaz farms and other friends. I know the perception of the others is that they are bad apples, but it's worse to say you sont when you do [and we all know the H word].

Dont you think it's time TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! 13 years in office the lady is full of herself and uses us like puppets. BULL. TIME FOR A REAL CHANGE in MIAMI!!!!
