I know a lot of people who have moved away from Miami: too much traffic, crime, poor schools, and polluted waters.
Why haven't civic, business, and government leaders of Miami championed investments to deal with the root causes? I'm tired of the Chamber cheerleading that glosses over the threat to our quality of life.
It's a real question, and deserves some answers from blog readers... what do you think?

In order for our elected officials to deal with quality of life issues, there is a political cycle that needs to be broken. Developers, lobbyists, and insiders wine and dine, give trips, and host fundraisers for politicians, which give them access that ordinary citizens do not have.
City, County, State, and Federal governments always seem to have deficits which mean they are always looking for dollars. When a new development is finished, it adds to the government coffers. Politicians seem to almost always vote for development at the expense of quality of life for the majority of the community.
Until elected officials respond to the needs of the community as a whole, instead of the well connected; the poor planning, over crowding, and mismanagement will continue.
