New Marlins Stadium to feature Romero Britto Sculpture ... by gimleteye

The Florida Marlins announced today that sculptures by famous Miami artist Romero Britto will adorn its new Miami stadium. Featured: a unique Britto design, 35 feet tall, of a cup made from aircraft metal designed to withstand any conceivable shock, including ridicule by bloggers. On EBay this morning, the 445 Britto items listed included, exclusively: a Menorah sculpture, $589, a Happy Bear Ceramic Figurine NEW, $44, a vibrant silk art tie, $19.99, a four piece luggage set, $759, spray for men, $28.89, a cruise watch, $289.99, a doggy jacket, $39.99, a cat candleholder w/ iron tray, $46.99, a pullover sweater for people, $99.99, a horse painting embellished with black glitter ("incredibly rare treasure offered at a ridiculous price!") $3,500, trivet hot plate, $11.00, and teapots, beauty cases, flower vases, drink holders, and Evian bottles. It's all here on Ebay.

Actually, Eyeonmiami has been on Britto's case for quite some time: we noted County Commissioner Natacha Seijas' comment, when Miami International Airport proposed that its workers wear Britto designed shirts: "'I don't want to see the employees at the airport walking around with tacky shirts on, My maid wears better clothes than this T-shirt.'' Take a trip with us down Memory Lane for my personal favorite post, from Art Basel 2007.

As if the hundreds of millions of dollars of tax subsidy for the Marlin Stadium and Parking Garage imposed by Manny Diaz was not a punishment enough for the next several decades! Do they also have to put salt on our wounds by installing yet another Britto sculpture? Moses was kinder to Pharaoh Ramesses!

the Miami community does itself a disservice by not giving other very fine local artists a chance at exposure and circulation. Britto again, in yet another location, is ridiculous.

I'm reminded of the Brady Bunch movie remake, where Mike Brady designs everything -- gas stations, car washes, oil rigs whatever -- in the exact same design as his home.

I heard there was going to be a spout at the bottom and they were going to dispense Land Shark Beer.

Jeffrey Loria, the Marlins owner, probably is being paid a commission paid for by the taxpayers, to put the Brito piece in Miami.

Natcha, for once, actually says something that make sense. What is so disgusting about this is that the relentless Britto manages to get taxpayer dollars for his junk. Come the revolution, the firing squads should start with the people from Art in Public Places.
