Commissioner Audrey Edmonson has a second challenger. By Geniusofdespair

Eddie Lewis of Miami Shores has signed on to challenge Audrey Edmonson. If it is the same Eddie Lewis, he also ran for Property Appraiser in 2008 getting 13.79% of the vote. He ran for Mayor in 2011 and got .67% of the vote. In 2006 he ran for Florida State House and lost again.

To be honest, I didn't even know Audrey's district went all the way to Miami Shores. I had to open a map to double check.

Lewis raised $11,620 for his mayoral campaign (all but $260 were loans to himself). He got $10 from Brett Berlin (what is that about? A fellow Democrat giving a pittance?). I don't consider this a serious challenge.

Folks, good intentions can't mount a decent campaign. If you can't raise any money, you can't win unless, of course, you are rich. You can then loan yourself the needed funds. You might be able to win with a third of the money of your opponent and a lot of hard work, but any less is pretty tricky. Ask Julio Robaina who lost to Xavier Suarez - He had less than a third ($76,808 to $254,016). The only exception I have seen is Jean Monestime. He had a credible $106,775, but that amounted to less than a third of Dorrin Rolle's $388,408.

Lewis is the reason that Gwen Margolis is not the Property Appraiser. The stupid local Democratic Party had too much white guilt and gave the unqualified Lewis a co-endorsement with Margolis. Margolis won the election, but Lewis stole just enough votes with his endorsement to force her into a runoff with Garcia. Because a non-Hispanic cannot beat a Hispanic in a one-on-one countywide race, the rest is history.

The readers of this blog need to come to, for them, the uncomfortable realization, that Miami-Dade County is majority Hispanic in terms of population and registered voters. The Dade County they grew up in the 60's, 70's, 80's, and even 90's is gone and Hispanics are and will be the dominant political force here for decades to come.

Eddie Lewis is ex-military and likes to stand up to speak.

If not for Lewis, Gwen Margolis could have won...She did win in the election but got less than 50%. Without Eddie in the race, she could have gotten that 50%.

Why? She got about 42% and Lewis had almost 14%. It is reasonable that she could have picked up 8% of another Democrat and prevented the runoff.

Thank you Genius for setting the record straight. Garcia is a disaster and I hope the voters realize this in 2012.

    Percent Votes
Pedro J. Garcia 31.27% 209,606
Eddie Lewis 13.49% 90,465
Gwen Margolis 42.05% 281,899
Jim Shedd 13.19% 88,425
      670,395

You are wrong comment. Youre are not taking into consideration Jim Shed who practically got the same amount of votes as Eddie....

What does jim shedd have to do with my comment.

I said, if lewis was out and margolis got 8% of his democratic vote she would have prevented a runoff. How is that wrong? The Black vote would not have gone to Garcia. This is a hypothetical moron. What don't you get that it could have happened. I am not saying it WOULD have happened. NOTE i said in my original comment: COULD

No worries. Apologies excepted.

I would suggest anyone living in this district to vote for anyone BUT Audrey Edmonson. Unless you shake up the status quo Edmonson will continue to reap the benefits of office without sacrificing a bead of sweat. The county's commission problems begin in the districts let's start voting out the incumbents so that new blood can take over. I don't know if Eddie Lewis is the answer but if he can just push out Edmonson for one term we can probably get an uncorrupt commissioner afterwards.
